Hot Buttered Rum Cider

Ingredients

  • 7 cups apple cider or juice
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 4 inches stick cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • Peel from 1 lemon, cut into strips
  • 1-1 1/2 cups rum
  • Butter
  • Thin apple slices

Directions

  1. Combine apple cider and brown sugar in a large saucepan. For spice bag, tie cinnamon, allspice, cloves and lemon peel in a 6'' square of cheesecloth.
  2. Add spice bag to cider mixture.
  3. Bring cider mixture to a boil over medium high heat. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 15 minutes.
  4. Remove and discard spice bag. Stir in rum to taste.
  5. Pour into mugs topped with 1/2 teaspoon butter each and one apple slice.
