2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS Update 6: Finish Line in Sight

It’s our goal to finish a yearlong loan with 20,000 miles on the odometer. Sometimes a good road trip is just the thing. So at 18,883 miles, I loaned the 2016 Camaro SS to associate road test editor, Erick Ayapana who set out from Los Angeles to attend the Cadillac V-Performance Academy at Spring Mountain in Pahrump, Nevada. After his 600-ish-mile trip, where he thought familiarizing himself with the Camaro’s LT1 engine was the perfect warm-up to the CTS-V’s monster LT4 engine,...

2018 BMW M8 Is Already in the Works

Say hello to the BMW M8. Although it’s still under wraps (literally), this latest Bavarian beauty was crafted alongside the all-new 8 Series Concept that made its stunning debut earlier this week in Milan, Italy.

BMW is tight lipped on all the details, but we are told that this fully camouflaged BMW M8 prototype “will be unveiled in a driving presentation as part of the support program for the Nürburgring 24-hour race.”

Compared to the recent BMW Concept 8 Series, this M version...

Mercedes-Benz Will Reveal All-Electric EQ A Hatch Concept in Frankfurt

It looks like BMW’s vaunted “i” division is going to face some intranational competition soon. According to a report from Autocar, Mercedes will unveil a new all-electric hatch concept at this year’s Frankfurt auto show.

Autocar says this five-door concept will be a preview of a production model for Mercedes’ new EQ brand, a nameplate aimed squarely at BMW’s “i” brand. We got our first glimpse of EQ back at the sub-brand’s launch at last year’s Paris auto show, where Merc...

Report: EVs Will Cost Less Than Gas-Powered Cars by as Early as 2025

Automakers are starting to bring more affordable EVs to market, but these cars are still much more expensive on average than their gasoline counterparts. And it will take well into the next decade for electric vehicles to catch up, according to new research from Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Electric vehicles are expected to see a consistent drop in prices for the foreseeable future. In the U.S. and Europe, EVs will actually cost less than gas-powered cars by as early as 2025, the report...

Minicars Have Highest Rates of Driver Deaths: IIHS

The smallest cars on the road tend to be the most dangerous ones, concludes a new report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Among 2014 vehicles, minicars had particularly high rates of driver deaths compared to other models, while larger luxury vehicles had some of the lowest rates.

Four-door minicars averaged 87 driver deaths per million registered vehicle years, the highest overall death rate of any vehicle category. In contrast, four-wheel-drive luxury SUVs fared the best...

13 Things You Might Not Know About the 2018 Karma Revero

We recently traveled to Laguna Beach, California, to be among the first to drive the 2018 Karma Revero, a luxury plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle (PHEV). Before we get to that, here are a number of things we learned.

Don’t call it a Fisker

Despite the similarities, don’t call this luxury PHEV grand tourer a “Fisker” Karma. Fisker Automotive declared bankruptcy in 2013, and a Chinese automotive parts supplier, Wanxiang Group, purchased its assets for $149.2 million and renamed the...

2017 BMW i3 Range-Extender First Test Review

Watching the evolution of electric cars is a lot like watching the evolution of fighter jets. The first generation of fighter jets, such as the Bell P-59 Airacomet, could travel at high-subsonic speeds, but otherwise early fighter jets largely followed the design principles of piston-engine fighters before it. If we break Electric Vehicles (EVs) into generations, the first typically followed the design principles of Neighborhood Electric Vehicles such as the GEM, with quirky golf cart–like...

Jaguar Debuts Limited-Production 592-HP XE SV Project 8

Jaguar’s Special Operations division has just unleashed the company’s latest ludicrous offering, the XE SV Project 8. But first, it must be tested on the Nürburgring’s infamous Nordschleife and could become, if its specs are to be believed, the fastest four-door sedan ever to lap the infamous test track. Currently, the fastest four-door around the track is Alfa Romeo’s Giulia Quadrifoglio, but that might change with the XE SV Project 8.

Unlike the Giulia QV’s twin-turbocharged...

No Big Deal: Volvo S60 Polestar Secretly Set a Record at the ‘Ring

Here’s a first: a manufacturer set a Nürburgring lap record and didn’t immediately brag about it. In fact, it kept the record a secret for about a year. That just-announced record, a 7:51.110 lap time for the fastest four-door roadgoing sedan, was set about a year ago, shortly after the 2016 WTCC Race of Germany.

The record-setting lap was ran while Cyan Racing was testing both race and road cars for the sake of development. The bright blue sedan surprised the team when it clocked its...

Lots of Vehicles, Especially Crossovers, on the Way Over Next Four Years

There are a whole lotta new cars on the horizon, an exorbitant number of them are crossovers, and the bounty comes as millions of vehicles come off lease and threaten to send the U.S. auto industry into a frightening downward spiral in the next few years.

That is according to Car Wars 2018-2021, an annual report on the future health of the U.S. auto industry by Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Research. The study, in its 27th year, was presented by senior auto analyst John Murphy in...

Vintage Subaru 360 Drive: Inauspicious Roots

The Subaru brand is on fire these days, with only two small annual sales decreases in the last 22 years and nine years of double-digit increases during that time. Strong products are earning these sales stats, as evidenced by Subie’s three SUV of the Year wins since 2009. The brand’s initial foray into the U.S. market was, erm, a bit less auspicious.

In the mid-1960s auto-mogul Malcom Bricklin had a notion to open a chain of gas stations that would also rent cheap motor scooters. During...
