From the Ashes: Possible Roster Cuts Who Could Help the Jets

Photo by Joshua Sarner/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Every year someone gets unexpectedly cut

Every year there are some surprise roster cuts in training camp. Some of these players have value but are either in need of a change of scenery or are just highly overpaid. The hoopla of signing a high priced free agent often ends with the team needing to “cut” some payroll so they can pay some other player.

Here are six players who could conceivably end up on Joe Douglas’ radar.

Scouting Jets cornerback Marcus Cooper

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

With camp now underway, we’re going to take a look at some more of the Jets’ offseason acquisitions, continuing today with Marcus Cooper.

Cooper is a 29-year old former 7th-round pick out of Rutgers. He has started 28 games in his career, racking up 155 tackles, 35 passes defensed and seven interceptions. However, he played in just six games with seven tackles last season.

Cooper was recruited to Rutgers as a wide receiver but struggled to...

Jets podcast: Thoughts on Avery Williamson’s injury

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

In the preseason nothing is more important than avoiding injuries. Yes, you would like the team to play well. You certainly want to see young players start to emerge. It isn’t the end of the world if these things don’t happen, though. Things can improve once the regular season starts. Serious injuries have a longer lasting impact.

The Jets did not escape their second preseason game unscathed. Linebacker Avery Williamson suffered an ACL tear that will keep...

Bringing your daily links to the NFL’s New York Jets

Good morning, Gang Green Nation! I hope you’re all having a great start to the day. Shout out to Mr. Wells as always for holding the fort down over the weekend. The Jets have announced that star RB Le’Veon Bell will not see any preseason action, and will be held out until week 1 against the Buffalo Bills. I’m honestly torn on this decision. On one hand, given LB Avery...

Adam Gase says Le'Veon Bell won't play Jets preseason games

For a player without a major injury, Le’Veon Bell has gone through a historically light amount of organized football work over the past 19 months. Bell’s game-action delay will continue until Week 1, with Adam Gase indicating (via Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, on Twitter) his top running back will be held out from Jets preseason games. Bell has not played in a game since the Steelers’ divisional-round loss to the Jaguars in January 2018. His most recent regular-season game was Week 16 of...

Jets confirm Le’Veon Bell will not play in the preseason

What seemed to be expected has now become a reality. New York Jets head coach Adam Gase confirmed Sunday evening that star running back Le’Veon Bell will not play at all this preseason. This comes after starting linebacker Avery Williamson suffered a torn ACL in the Jets’ second preseason game. Gase took full credit for keeping the defensive playcaller out on the field longer than he should have. Signed to a four-year, $52.5 million deal back in March, the Jets are expecting Bell to play...

Jets' Gase blames self for Williamson's torn ACL

Jets coach Adam Gase blames himself for playing Avery Williamson late into the second quarter of Thursday's preseason game. After Williamson suffered a season-ending injury, Gase decided running back Le'Veon Bell won't play in the preseason.

Le’Veon Bell will not play for Jets in preseason, aiming for Week 1

The world will have to wait a little bit longer to see Le’Veon Bell take the field for the New York Jets. Jets coach Adam Gase said Sunday that the team will be holding their new running back out for the rest of the preseason but expressed confidence that Bell will be ready for Week 1, per Andy Vasquez of NorthJersey.com. Of course, Bell did not play at all last season as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers and is currently having to learn an entirely new offense. Now he won’t even have...

Jets Green and White Practice News and Live Updates

Photo by Frank Mattia/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Tonight the Jets hold their annual Green and White Practice at MetLife Stadium.

This is usually one of the featured events of training camp. This year it is technically not part of training camp. The Jets officially broke camp on Tuesday. This practice was originally scheduled for a few weeks ago at Rutgers, but it was moved back to tonight.

Under Rex Ryan the Green and White Practice was a full scrimmage. Todd Bowles conducted a...

Sam Darnold against the Falcons: First drive

Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

Let’s take a look at the throws Sam Darnold made on his first drive of Thursday’s preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.

2nd and 6; NYJ 38

On this play Darnold is likely able to decipher man coverage presnap because of Chris Herndon’s motion.

A linebacker follows Herndon back and forth to tip man coverage.

Also worth noting presnap is the Jets bunching Quincy Enunwa and Jamison Crowder at the bottom of the picture. Desmond Trufant has...

Good morning, GGN! The Jets are preparing for their third pre-season game of 2019 against the New Orleans Saints next Saturday. Most of the starters should get in at least a half of football in that game, maybe more, leaving the backups fighting for limited snaps in the second half. This means it is already very late in the process to nail down back of the roster positions, with a very limited window of opportunity left to move up the...

Could Jadeveon Clowney help solve one of the Jets' biggest problems?

Trading for Houston's disgruntled pass rusher would provide a short-term upgrade for the Jets' defense, but several hurdles make a deal unrealistic.

Jets Sign LB Albert McClellan

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

In the wake of Avery Williamson’s season ending knee injury, the New York Jets have signed free agent linebacker Albert McClellan.

Albert McClellan is a 33 year old, 6’ 2”, 235 pound linebacker out of Marshall University. McClellan was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Baltimore Ravens in 2010. McClellan spent the first year of his NFL career on the Ravens’ practice squad before making the 53 man roster in 2011. He became a starting...

Jets sign linebacker Albert McClellan

In the wake of Avery Williamson‘s unfortunate ACL tear, the Jets are making a move. The team is signing linebacker Albert McClellan, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network (Twitter link). Williamson’s injury left the Jets thin at linebacker, so this move makes some sense. McClellan spent the first nine seasons of his career with Baltimore, but was cut by the Ravens early on last season. He latched on with the Patriots and spent the last couple months of the season with New England,...

NY Jets: Preseason Midpoint Takeaways

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

What have we learned?

Halfway through the preseason, most of the key Jets have gotten some real game reps. Le’Veon Bell has been bubble-wrapped despite not playing for about 600 days, but everyone else has seen the field and given us something to think about moving forward. Here are some of the things to note from weeks 1 and 2 of the preseason:

1) Sam Darnold looks like he’s taken a step forward

Darnold has only lead a handful of drives thus far, but...

Good morning, GGN! The second Jets preseason game of 2019 is in the books. The starting units looked solid. The blitz packages were getting to the quarterback. The backup defensive backs ... well, let’s just say they didn’t exactly inspire confidence. Ditto for the kicker. Ah well, on to the Saints. The Saints come marching in a week from today, and you’ll want to be a part of that number.

Studs, Duds From Jets Win Over Falcons

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports STUDS Quinnen Williams, DT

Williams did not light up the stat sheet (zero tackles, one quarterback hit), but for the first time, we saw glimpses of the dominant potential that made Williams the third overall pick. He had a few rushes in which he overwhelmed interior linemen with power to create pressure on the quarterback. He also drew a hold on one play. The box score didn’t capture it, but Williams made a lot of noise in Atlanta.
