The 2024 MLB season opened in Seoul, South Korea, where the Dodgers and Padres split a two-game set at the Gocheok Sky Dome. This coming weekend, the Astros and Rockies will meet at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú (Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium) in Mexico City, Mexico for the second international series of the regular season.
It’s no secret that the Houston Astros have gotten off to a rough start this year. The Astros currently sit 12 games below .500 and in last place in the American League West.
The news is obviously great for Valdez personally. He and the club got a scare when he landed on the injured list earlier this month due to soreness in his throwing elbow.

Quality depth in the starting rotation remains elusive.
In a first inning this season, Astros pitchers have allowed 30 earned runs across 25 games. Or, you know, a ghastly 10.80 ERA. For reference, the 2008 Astros had a 7.04 ERA in the first inning that entire season, the highest for a single season in the first inning in franchise history. Only the Rockies pitching staff has posted a higher ERA (12.60) in the first inning this season.

It’s deja vu all over again.
For the last three games, the Astros have been forced to use their minor league-quality starters, and for the third straight game, the game was effectively over in the first inning.
On Sunday, Hunter Brown surrendered three first-inning runs en route to a 6-0 Nats win. On Tuesday night, J.P. France gave up five runs, putting the Astros in a hole leading to a 7-2 loss to the Cubs.
