You’re not imagining things. The price of eggs has doubled in the last year, far outpacing inflation.

These days, breaking an egg is like breaking the bank. The cost of the cooking ingredient nearly doubled from December 2021 to December 2022, jumping from $1.82 for a grade-A dozen to almost $3.60, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Meanwhile, the price of a carton has cracked $5.50 in the Midwest, and $7 in California.
